Top Picks from Hans Goedicke Collection

Brooke Friedman

On August 26th, 2017, Alex Cooper is proud to host a gallery auction that offers treasures from the personal collection of Hans Goedicke. Goedicke was a professor of Near Eastern studies, long time Egyptologist, researcher and writer. His collection reflects many years of travel and discovery featuring glassware, furniture, maps, rugs, and artifacts, among other gems that he accumulated during his time as a professional in the field.

One of the highlights in the collection is the glassware (lots 1274-1294). The collection includes 18th century Gregorian and continental air twist glass stems. Georgian air twist wine glasses are one of the most widely admired 18th century wine glass forms. They were an 18th century evolution from the air tears and twisted tears in earlier plain stem glasses. These special pieces would be a great addition to a dining room setting for an extra touch of elegance.

The rugs featured in this collection are not only special due to their age, but as our rug expert Zachary Yusupov explains “a beautiful piece of history with a sense of purpose, often prayer, but also serve the purpose as works of art” He described the rugs as “charming…a way to connect to history and human heritage of workmanship and craft.” Many of the rugs also reflect traditional weaving and coloring techniques.

The furniture in the sale highlights Goedicke’s wide interest and styles, including traditional continental forms and stylish Danish Modern pieces. Our furniture specialist Hilary Strimple adds that “In contrast to the heavy, block-like forms of the continental pieces (lots 1404 and 1405) collected by Goedicke, the Danish Modern furniture is sleek in form. Danish Modern furniture became an instant success during the early and mid-20th century, due to the gentle, almost organic, lines used and focus on quality craftsmanship. Lots 1400 – 1402 and 1410 illustrate the elegant silhouettes of this style.”

Goedicke also amassed a large collection of hand-colored engravings and maps, such as lot 1315. The maps are not only beautiful, but are also fascinating due to their historical references.
