Well known for his landscapes, a palette of cool blues and warm, sunny yellows and whimsical birds, make the “The Patriarch” is a particularly cheerful example of Maril’s signature style (lot 1003). Previously part of the private collection and estate of Baltimore artist and patron, Phyllis Zheutlin, and on view at C. Grimaldis Gallery, Alex Cooper is very excited to be able to offer this work to a larger audience.
A Baltimore native, modernist painter Herman Maril was born in 1908, and began his prolific art career studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Maril was one of many noteworthy American artists to participate in Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal program during the Great Depression, later attracting the interest of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, who continued to support his work. Post World War II, Maril began an over 30-year teaching career as a professor of painting in the Art & Art History Department at the University of Maryland. His paintings are in the permanent collection of The Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington, DC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Whitney Museum of American Art, all in New York; and The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, among many others. His estate is represented by Debra Force Fine Art Gallery in New York City.
